IP Technology

The security world has moved high into the tech world. IP technology is the latest trend in surveillance systems, which includes Megapixel security cameras.  Some of the benefits of IP Security cameras include:

  • Using existing or new network infrastructure
  • Removing the boundaries of wiring, i.e. from one building to another
  • The use of the Internet for receiving video from a camera located in a different location, building, city, even a different continent
  • Managing and recording video in one single Network Digital Recorder, NVR, from multiple remote locations
  • The use of Megapixel or HD Security Cameras, i.e. 1.3Mp, 2.0Mp, or 5.0 Megapixels
  • Using a Hybrid system with both analog and digital IP cameras
  • In some models, recording capabilities inside the camera itself, then remotely accessing recorded video

NVRs and Video Management Software usually are compatible with a series of IP camera brands.

Compression type – In selecting an IP system, you have a few options in video compressing format.  MPEG4 is generally a good compression, which allows better bandwidth performance over the internet than its predecessor MJPG compression; however, the H.264 video compression is the latest compression type, which compresses video files over twice as small as MPEG4 without jeopardizing video quality, allowing faster video transmission over the internet or your network.

When selecting an IP Surveillance System, there are many options out there.  If you are beginning to move into the IP technology, you could do it gradually, while maintaining your existing analog cameras.  A Hybrid system may be a good solution for you.

If you are planning to use your existing network infrastructure, consider creating a new one strictly for video surveillance.  You will need it down the line.

Frames per Second (fps)  -  The more frames per second you are going to record, the smoother the video will be, however, network bandwidth requirement is going to increase.

Video Resolution – Not only plays a huge role in increasing video quality, but in network bandwidth requirement.  These are the most common resolution sizes in surveillance video today:
